Får litt over .003 med tørre lagre.
Dear Olav,
Many thanks for your enquiry.
Yes, both the journal and the shell should be lubricated. But with different lubricants.
We recommend the use of a mineral grease for the journal and a silicone grease, such as MS4, for the white metal shell. The reason is to ensure that when the shell is separated from the journal the ribbon of Plastigauge remains intact to give a clean profile for the gauge card. Should the Plastigauge split when the shell is separated from the journal it becomes more difficult to determine the clearance. It is still possible however. Look carefully at the journal and you will be able to see where the plastigauge had been before the shell was removed. There will be both a real and a virtual ribbon. Apply the gauge card to the sum of them!
If the readings show 0.003 thousands of an inch (0.003”) that is the clearance, as defined universally. Of course, if the journal floats exactly mid-way the clearance would 2 x 0.0015”. In use, the clearance rotates, taking lubricants with it. In most engines contact metal to metal is prevented only by the strength of a few molecules.
I hope the above assists. Should you require any further information or assistance please do not hesitate to contact us immediately.
